How to Choose Sleeping Pad

Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind when shopping for a new sleeping pad. There are three types out there: foam sleeping pads, self-inflating sleeping pads, and air pads, as well as some hybrid insulated air pads that are sort of self inflating. Foam pads are light but bulky. Self inflating pads, popularized in the 1980s, tend to bulky but are great for car camping. If you’re backpacking, we suggest sticking with the air pad, which offer the best insulation and comfort to size and weight. Keep these tips in mind:

Know Yourself

Everyone sleeps differently, and different pads will be better for different people. Are you a side sleeper who sleep cold? Go for a thicker pad with more insulation. Sleep every which way and always waking up hot? Get an ultralight pad that’s quiet, so your tossing and turning won’t disturb your tent mates.

Intended Use

Decide which activity your pad is for: backpacking, car camping, winter camping, etc.:

Car camping: When you’re not limited by size and weight, you can choose a thicker, larger mattress for sleeping comfort. Self-inflating pads are often good choices for car camping.

Backpacking: Those who prefer good sleep comfort when backpacking, might choose self-inflating or air pads, which offer a variety of thicknesses, durability, insulation value and weight.

Thru-hiking: Here, low weight is important, but durability for the long haul is also key. Closed-cell foam pads are your best bet. CampORing is built for outdoor hiking made of durable materials (40D nylon and and multi-layer TPU)

Weight & Packed Size

The further you plan to hike in a day, the more important the issue of weight becomes. Consider for a moment that you're working out at the gym. If you're only doing five reps, adding five pounds of weight might not be that big a deal. But if you're going for 50 reps, that five-pound increase makes a major difference. Reducing weight is important if you plan on pushing yourself to your limits. That said, not everyone will place the same importance on weight reduction.
